Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - December 27 2025 - Before being forced to merge in 1902, the bands Chakastaypasin, James Smith, and Peter Chapman were each independent.

Now, the James Smith Cree Nation is fighting for freedom.

Their deal with the federal government is worth $713.8 million, and it puts right the unfair things that happened in the past because of this merger.

Each band has gotten $50 million in advance payments.

The Peter Chapman Band is actively starting to grow on its own.

At the same time, the attempts to restore the Chakastaypasin Band's status are ongoing.

The leadership stresses the importance of the settlement.

It is a step toward healing and community investment, focused on housing development and the possible return of traditional lands.

This is an important step in their de-amalgamation process.
