Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - December 29 2025 - Ottawa and First Nations are presenting competing reform plans for the child welfare system to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, marking a significant step in a nearly 20-year struggle.

This comes after a court decision in August based on a 2007 human rights case that said the federal government's lack of funds was discriminatory to First Nations children.

In 2024, progress on a reform agreement stopped when the First Nations turned down a $47.8-billion deal because they thought it didn't protect children enough.

This led to Ottawa putting formal talks outside of Ontario on hold.

The previous agreement failed, so Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty said that the government should work on regional agreements that are based on a national policy.
